Ecophysiology of a small ectotherm tracks environmental variation along an elevational cline

چکیده
Aim Physiological responses to climate can be used quantify the environmental limits that a species tolerate and are, therefore, key biogeographical studies. Several ecophysiological climatic factors may shape distribution of species, but our knowledge is mostly centred in thermal ecophysiology. We applied an integrative approach investigate how small ectotherm are modulated by variation across elevational gradient. Location Victoria, Australia. Taxon Lampropholis guichenoti (Scincidae, Squamata). Methods examined metabolic rate, evaporative water loss, physiology locomotor performance, four populations skink gradient Australia (17–1546 m). biophysical modelling test behaviour impacts survival activity these skinks. Results Populations from lowlands had lower rates preferences, higher optimal temperatures increased performance compared high elevations. Biophysical models revealed allows skinks elevation maintain their body above freezing determining patterns. Main conclusions Our holistic study shows combination physiological behavioural ectotherms survive different environments. The interplay between help explain sets for geographical range ectotherms.

VARIATION IN LEAF MORPHOLOGY OF PARROTIA PERSICA ALONG AN ELEVATIONAL GRADIENT IN EASTERN MAZANDARAN PROVINCE (N. IRAN)
In order to investigate the variation within and among populations of Parrotia persica C.A. Meyer based on leaf morphological traits, three populations were selected from Behshar area, in the east of Mazandaran Province. The populations selected along a transect in different altitudes of 182, 340, 540 meter above the sea level, respectively. In each population, 10 trees were selected and some l...
متن کاملNatural selection along an environmental gradient: a classic cline in mouse pigmentation.
We revisited a classic study of morphological variation in the oldfield mouse (Peromyscus polionotus) to estimate the strength of selection acting on pigmentation patterns and to identify the underlying genes. We measured 215 specimens collected by Francis Sumner in the 1920s from eight populations across a 155-km, environmentally variable transect from the white sands of Florida's Gulf coast t...
متن کاملA Complex Metacommunity Structure for Gastropods Along an Elevational Gradient
The metacommunity framework integrates species-specific responses to environmental gradients to detect emergent patterns of mesoscale organization. Abiotic characteristics (temperature, precipitation) and associated vegetation types change with elevation in a predictable fashion, providing opportunities to decouple effects of environmental gradients per se from those of biogeographical or histo...
متن کاملVariation in seed dispersal along an elevational gradient in Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Seed dispersal by ants is ecologically important and geographically widespread as 20–50% of all herbaceous species in eastern deciduous forests are dispersed by ants, but we know little about how or why such interactions vary geographically. In this paper, we examined variation in seed dispersal by ants along an extensive elevational gradient (256–2025 m) in the Great Smoky Mountains National P...
متن کاملGrasshopper Community Response to Climatic Change: Variation Along an Elevational Gradient
BACKGROUND The impacts of climate change on phenological responses of species and communities are well-documented; however, many such studies are correlational and so less effective at assessing the causal links between changes in climate and changes in phenology. Using grasshopper communities found along an elevational gradient, we present an ideal system along the Front Range of Colorado USA ...
